Fire guts historic building

Two appliances from the Raetihi Fire Brigade, police and ambulance were in attendance at a blaze at the Golden Acre Hotel in Seddon Street, Raetihi, shortly before 1pm onFriday. The former Waimarino Hotel has sat vacant for some years and was in the process of being demolished to make way for the proposed Waimarino Health Centre.

Owner Martin Dekker said he was inside the building using a chainsaw when the fire started. A spark apparently accidently ignited some spilt chainsaw fuel and ignited the wooden floor boards. Fire fighters arrived promptly at the scene and were able to save the building from complete destruction.
