Board OK for Mangapurua track upgrade
A request by Raetihi landowner Lionel West, for resource consent to upgrade a section of Mangapurua Road for the purposes of logging, was endorsed by the Waimarino Community
Board at their monthly meeting. Mr West proposed to upgrade 1 6 km of road from the Ruatiti Junction to his own property access. The proposed logging is
to take place over two seasons during dry weather. At the end of the logging period Mr West is to ensure the road is crowned for free draining and all new and existing culverts are left in
workable condition. He also gave an assurance that all overhanging vegetation would be cut back by hand and deposited within the vegetation growth, and that spoil would
be used as fill where possible, or else deposited on the outside of the carriage-way but still within the boundaries of the road reserve. Area engineer Don Sattler told the board that he could not forsee a prob-
lem with Mr West's proposal, provided that the methodology as agreed to by Mr West is strictly adhered to. Board member John Compton said Mr West's proposal had considerable
local support and complied with the board' s requirements. Individuals or organisations have until 30 June to make their submissions to the Ruapehu District Council concerning the proposal.
