Illegal dumping concerns Council

Several instances of illegal dumping of rubbish by "irresponsible indi viduals" has concemed the Ruapehu District Council. Chief executive Cliff-Houston said the council has received several complaints over the past few months conceming rubbish being dumped on road verges and into neighbouring properties. A person was recently seen disposing an animal carcass over a roadside bank. The person was spoken to by a Council officer and advised to remove it to avoid further action. Mr Houston said animal carcasses are not accepted at the various refuse disposal sites throughout the district, excepting where and when it can be immediately buried. Residents who need to dispose of ani-

mal remains should contact the Council for information, he said. Where evidence of illegal dumping is obtained, the offender is served with a letter from the Council, asking that they clean up the mess within a given time. If the situation remains unresolved the matter is handed on to the police with the recommendation that a prosecution be made. Mr Houston said that in most situations the situation is remedied before the police become involved but considerable staff time is wasted dealing with these matters.
