Council welfare costs up

The total net cost of operating the Community Welfare Services within the Ruapehu district during the 1994/95 financial year was outlined in the Ruapehu District Council' s Draft Annual Plan, presented to councillors in Ohakune last Wednesday. From a budget of $213,000 last year the proposed budget for the next financial year is $230,000. This is made up as follows (last year's figures in brackets): Pensioner housing $146,000 ($1 1 1,000); Community housing $46,000 ($37,000); Rental housing $55,000 ($45,000); Civil Defence $59,000 ($50,000); and rural fire protection $34,000 ($30,000). Cr Bob Peck questioned the need for pensioner flat rental increases which he said the figures seemed to imply. "Now that the govemment and New Zealand Housing Corporation are having another look at state rentals why not wait for a government decision before we take any action to increase rents for our pensioner flats?," he asked. Chief Executive Cliff Houston assured councillors that there was no need to come to a hasty decision. "We still have time before making a final decision about pensioner flat rentals", he said.
