Wool pressing to be a spectator event

A wool pressing competition is to feature this Queen's Birthday Weekend as a spectator sport as well as an event for many locals. The event is to be held at the Ruapehu Hotel on the Sunday of Queens Birthday Weekend, 5 June, sponsored by the Ruapehu Hotel and Mannell and Follick. The event is being organised by Jim Edmonds Jnr with Rona TeHuia's help. Entrants can be registered up to 1 1am on the day with the competition starting at 12 noon. It is hoped that this will be able to combine with Waimarino Shears in the future and extend that competition to shear-

ing and wool pressing. This is the first wool pressing competition to be organised for the area and will be run to New Zealand rules with slight variation of those rules that do not apply to this event. Single heats will be run first at 12 noon with an entry fee of $20. First prize $200 and second prize $100. Mixed pairs will follow the singles with an entry fee of $30. First prize $400 and second prize $200. The final will be competed for at 7pm. The event is aimed at locals and is seen as a good opportunity to promote one of the main industries of the area giving employment to the local community.
