Security focus of seminar

State-of-the-art security systems take centre stage at this Wednesday's crime prevention seminar to be held at Cleche's Bar at the Ohakune Hotel. The seminar that begins at 7.30pm is aimed at local retailers and focuses on crime prevention measures including prevention of theft and robbery and thwarting shop lifters. Ohakune electrician Mike Fetzer who has been installing alarm systems for local businesses for the past 10 years will be on hand at the seminar with a range of the latest security systems. Mr Fetzer said security control is providing an increasing amount of business for his company and is unfortunately a sign of the times. The modern systems that are available now have so many features that it is just impossible to list them all, he said. Systems range from the simple audible controls that most people are familiar with, to sophisticated card control systems that can control who enters what area and when, and allows the user to turn on lights and appliances via the telephone. Sensor-type systems have also diversified and include vibration sensors to detect

doors and walls being kicked in and glass breaking, to movement detectors, pressure pads and infra-red beams. Simple radio systems that are operated by remote can be used to protect farm equipment. Mr Fetzer said the system he recommends for the average residential or commercial premises is a silent entry type combined with an audible system that is monitored by a competent monitor company.
