Clyde right turn out
Turning right into Clyde Street from Goldfinch Street won't be on, if a scheme to alleviate Ohakune' s winter traffic problems comes into being. The Waimarino Community Board endorsed in principle a proposal put by Constable Ian Harrison, which would see: □ A -No Right Turn' sign erected on the Goldfinch Street intersection with State Highway 49 (Clyde Street), along with road markings or possibly a raised island. □ A sign at the southern end of Christie Park of 'suitable size' warning motorists to turn right into Ayr Street if they wish to head north. □ That traffic leaving the Ohakune New World carpark turn left only into Goldfinch Street (with signs and markings). □ That commercial delivery trucks be encouraged to use the delivery lane behind the picture theatre and Bakery Mall, and that its surface be upgraded. □ That an exit onto Ayr Street from the rear of the New World carpark be investigated. Mr Harrison said the police would be discussing the proposal with retailers and Transit New Zealand. He said TNZ would probably be interested because it involved SH49. Board members expressed doubts about the service lane idea, as this w&s on private property which meant the council had no control over it. Also endorsed by the board was a proposal to paint noparking road markings outside Ohakune Primary School to alleviate a safety problem on wet days. Mr Harrison said at present, school pupils place cones in the gutter directly in front of the school car park to discourage people from parking there. The proposal was to paint large yellow hatch markings and broken yellow lines on the eastern side directly in front of the main entrance. On the western side a 20-metre strip of broken yellow line would be painted to keep cars clear and thus improve visibility as children cross the road at this point.
