College Soccer

The weekend saw Ruapehu College travel away to play Taihape and beat them 7-2. In the first five minutes some good one-touch football saw the ball go to midfielder Aeneas O'Sullivan who ran circles around a bewildered T aihape defence and fire the ball across the goal mouth to the ever-present Robert Speers who fired the ball past a very surprised goal keeper. Minutes later Sandra Smith flicked the ball out to Daniel Forster who found a bit of room on the right wing. Daniel rammed the ball across the penalty area, the ball striking the hand of a defender giving Ruapehu an easy scoring chance with a penalty. The penalty was slotted away taking the score to 2-0 in the first 10 minutes. Taihape started to look dangerous with counter attacks, but the combined effort of the Ruapehu defence, Glen Marriott, Lyndsay Cast with support from Daniel Forster and Jo Barkley, frustrated the Taihape forwards. Ruapehu again began to dominate the game. After a good break the ball was knocked across theTaihape goalmouth, Vanessa Parker's shot was blocked but the ball was deflected to Speers who did not waste his chance, driving the ball into the net. A quick Taihape attack saw the referee awarding a penalty to the T aihape team, an excellent save from Nilash saw the score stay at 3-0. Ruapehu came back strongly, with two quick

goals taking the first half score 5-1. A strong second half performance saw the T aihape defence under considerable pressure, another Ruapehu attack saw the ball being hit by Robert Speers from the edge of the penalty area, the ball floating over the goalkeeper into the net: 6-1. Further pressure by Ruapehu saw a second penalty awarded, Glen Marriott unlucky to drill the ball against the cross bar. Taihape found themselves with a late consolation goal taking the score to 6-2, but Ruapehu were not finished yet, a dazzling piece of ball eontrol by Aeneas followed by class finishing saw the final score at 7-2. Ruapehu deserved their win playing some attractive football, well played to Robert Speers with his 4 goals . Player of the day was Aeneas O'Sullivan.
