Ruapehu College 4, Wanganui East Athletic 3. Ruapehu had the daunting task this weekend of facing the confident and strong Wanganui East Athletic. A good start by Ruapehu College . saw Aeneas O' Sulh van beat two defenders down the left wing then cross a superb ball to Robert Speers who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. A strong comeback by Athletic saw the game equal 1-1, four minutes later. Again Athletic continued to hammer away at the Ruapehu defence and three minutes before half-time they took the lead, 2-1.
Athletic continued their attack which resulted in a penalty after Ruapehu centre defender Glenn Marriot brought the opposition inside forward down. A fine save by the Ruapehu goalkeeper saw the score stay at 2-1 for the break. The second half saw a determined Ruapehu side dominate all facets of play, with Aeneas again ripping the Athletic defence apart to cross another excellent ball. Again it was Speers who drilled the ball home, 2-2. Towards the end of the second spell Nilash Sharma drove the ball into the back of the net and Aeneas capped off a good game with Ruapehu' S fourth goal. In the last minute of the game Athletic gained a consolation goal, with the final result 4-3. Ruapehu College' s man of the match was Robert Speers who fought hard throughout a very entertaining game, thoroughly deserving his two goals.
