Ohakune--Karioi Womens Rugby in recess?
By Ossie The Ohakune-Karioi women' s rugby team may be forced to withdraw from the Wanganui competition which starts on 8 May at Hunterville. A team meeting was held on Sunday 17 April to discuss the future of the team and the commitment required from the players, coaches and the convenors, to make the season successful. Coach Murdoch Henare told the nine players who turned up and the other team organisers that unless they have 20 players who can commit themselves to the Wednesday night practices and the Sunday games by the end of the week, the team will be forced to go into recess. Since pre-season training commenced on 13 February the team has had up to 22 players attend training. Unfortunately there have only been 10 or 1 1 players who attend the practices on a regular basis. In a final bid
to keep the women' s rugby team going the existing players will be assisting manager Eva Kaata to recruit new players. Any ladies, young or old are welcome to attend the practices on Wednesday nights from 6.30pm-8pm, and Sunday aftemoons from 3pm-5pm. "Just come down for a look Or even for some fun extra fitness," said Mrs Kaata. In support of the team Rick Lowe has sponsored some aftermatch drinks and player of the day awards. Turoa Taxis are also keen to donate player of the day T-shirts throughout the season. There will be a meeting. on Sunday 24 April at the Ohakune Club rooms at 3pm to discuss the future of the Ohakune women' s rugby team. Coach Murdoch Henare will be providing a light supper and some refreshments. All existing players and new players are welcome to attend. For further enquiries ring: Murdoch Henare, 385 8653, or after 6pm: John Heron, 385 8255; Korty Wilson, phone 385 9225.
