Recycling suggested for handling confidential papers
Sending confidential papers to a paper recycler or using a shredder are the best methods of dealing with such material, according to the Ruapehu District Council. Waimarino Community Board member John Compton called for a report on the matter of dealing with confidential material at the council' s dumps, and environmental asset manager Tim Mill's report in reply is to be considered at the board' s meeting this week. Mr Mills said recyclers would guarantee to destroy confidential material. He said burying such material at a landfill dump was not effective. "In mid-1993 a perfectly readable newspaper was dug
up at the Taumarunui Landfill which had been buried for approximately 16 years," he said. One of the reasons Mr Compton suggested looking at ways to dispose of confidential material is that people light fires at the council' s dumps to destroy it a practice that is illegal. Mr Mills said in his report that the council has been working with an outside organisation "with regard to the supply of glass and paper recycling bins in Ohakune and Raetihi, and paper recycling in Taumarunui". "It is estimated that once a scheme is in place half a ton of cardboard per day could be taken out of the waste stream entering the Taumarunui Landfill," he said.
