• Terry Cowland may be horrified to know that we have at least three things in common. Each of us perceived a wrong to be righted: I to some parents

and possible teachers, he to - I'm not quite sure. Secondly we each want 'a climate in the community for rational debate, discussion and cohesiveness'. In fact this is what many parents have been asking for! Thirdly, he also is making 'unsubstantiated' claims. Names, dates, places please, of where vertical grouping is up and running successfully, especially in New Zealand. The structure of sole-charge country schools is born of necessity. Also when the roll reaches a certain number, another teacher is provided. If vertical grouping is so desirable, working so well and popular with a majority of parents, why the fear and reluctance to hold a public meeting for all -parents and staff where all options could be discussed and then a vote taken on whether or not to retain vertical grouping? I think more form I and II parents are sceptical of the system than are others. They think the students are not being prepared properly for college, due in part to distraction of older children by younger children looking for help. They also think class sizes are too large for vertical grouping. Another option worth considering, but whether it is feasible or not I do not know, is that Ruapehu College could perhaps run a class for forms I and II pupils.

That college has a very good reputation and twice the editor of the Wanganui Chronicle has mentioned Mr Harry Cast in his editorials. Enclosed is,a copy of the document supporting the schools claim to be an inspiration to the rest of the world. I now look forward to meeting Mr Cowland at a public meeting where all parents may

have their say without being browbeaten. Such a meeting would go a long way toward fostering a more positive relationship between the school and community. After all, "we are all interested in the welfare of our young people - they are our future".
