Tears for 200

Spare a tear for the onion peeler. It was a whole new experience for Raetihi 's Michelle Berry helping prepare meals for about 200 soldiers in New Plymouth recently. Michelle, pictured wincing while peeling onions, was one of four civilian casual kitchen-hand cooks who joined the catering section for the 5th Battalion (Wellington, West Coast and Taranaki), Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, at its annual field exercise during 518 February. Michelle, 19, said she does a little cooking at horne but this was her first time catering for large numbers. "It' s been good," she said toward the end of the camp. "It's the first time I've been on anything like this and I found it interesting. I picked up some good cooking hints, too."
