Farm forestry group formed
A new branch of the Farm Forestry Association has been formed in the Ruapehu District. The new group wishes to promote knowledge of and interest in forestry and tree-growing generally amongst farmers and other interested people. The first meeting and field day was held at Robin Caldwell's farm near Taumarunui on 16 February. The group looked at recent tree planting on Mr Caldwell's farm, a notable feature of which was the spectacular
growth of Eucalyptus nitens. Following this several radiata pine plantations in the neighbourhood were viewed. Two well-tended stands about 20-years old were estimated to be worth, in another 10-years, possibly $70000/ha (net to the grower). This contrasted with an untended stand of the same age now being harvested for a return which amounted to a small fraction of that figure. The new organisation is planning a regular programme of field days in the district to look at various aspects of farm forestry. The secretary is Kevin Stephenson of Peach, Cornwall and Partners, Taumarunui. Waimarino enquiries may be made to Andrew Allen.
