Ruapehu College report

By

Third formers started their year off with some fun as they ventured off the school grounds for the annual third form camps, with staff Miss K Wilson and Youth Aid Officer Brian Wilson. There were three camps held and 3R, 3U and 3A participated in activities such as a tramp to Blyth Hut, a BurmaTrail, helping DoC with their anti-erosion programme and a day at Waiouru with Army physical training instructors, taking part in confidence and trust games. The reaction to the camp? - big smiles - which hopefully forecasts what next year's third formers will receive when they go on their camp. This year a number of elections have taken place within the college, one of which was to find this year' s student representative on the Board of Trustees. The

winning nominee for 1994 is Joanne Barclay. Staff changes also took place this week with Mrs George now on leave to further her knowledge of Maori. This will provide more of an advantage for students in the future. The new assistant principal will be Mr Laurenson and Miss McEwing will be responsible for girls' welfare. Mr Simon Langborne came in to the school. from the 'Youth for Understanding' organisation, giving information on exchange programmes. The talk was quite successful with some students seeking more information on where they could go on exchange. The main areas which are available are Europe and Japan. Aboys' touch rugby tournament was held at Wanganui City College and although the Ruapehu boys suffered a loss, their play was skilful and entertaining. The school' s whanau

competition kicked off this year with a 'top-town' contest. Each hapu competed against the other two hapu of their whanau, participating in a relay race which consisted of various activities ranging from a sack race to pitching a tent. Once the activity was completed the competitor passed the baton on to the next person. Final results were: 1st Tui CC; 2nd Huia KH; 3rd Weka SB; 4th Kiwi RM. All in attendance agreed that it was an enjoyable afternoon. The diving finals were held on 18 February at the Raetihi swimming pool. There were a few surprises on the day as the following divers plunged their way to success: Junior Girl Rochelle Te Huia; Junior Boy Joshua Smith; Intermediate Girl Tina McFadyen; Intermediate Boy Andrew Murdie; Senior Girl Amanda Te Huia; SeniorBoyPeterWikohika.
