Garage man shoots at the nationals
Raetihi shooter Ken Summerhays is recovering from a gruelling week of competition at the New Zealand Outdoor Championships, shot at Tokoroa. The first two days of competition was a dual range shoot over 100 yards (Monday) and 50 yards (Tuesday) that he won convincingly, beating some of this country's top shooters. On Wednesday Ken captained a team of 20 NZ shooters for the Dewar Cup, against teams from Great Britian, USA, South Africa and Canada, in a 'postal shoot.' The same afternoon he shot in the 'North v South' competition, with the Mainlanders pipping the North Island team by just one point. He was thrilled with his fifth oyerall placing in the 50m
shoot held over two days later in the week. As a result of his qualification he was selected for competition in the Slazenger Shield - a postal 50m shoot against an Australian 20-man team. Ken also qualified for the Wakefield Trophy shoot as a member of a team of 1 0 shooting once again agai nst South Africa, Great Britian, USA and Canada. He was placed second overall, runner-up only to the New Zealand Commonwealth Games champion shooter, Steve Pedersen. Ken has his sights set for selection to the Oceania development squad, the fore-runner to competition at Commonwealth and Olympic level. With the outdoor shooting season at an end he intends to continue a strenuous practice regime at Raetihi ' s indoor facility, in preparation for the North v South shoot to be held at Oamaru in June.
