Blue ducks banded

Department of Conservation staff have been tracking down and banding blue ducks in the Manganui a Te Ao river, north of Raetihi, as part of efforts to get to know more about this threatened native bird. Banding enables staff to find out what happens to the birds, how far they travel, the age structure of the population, when they breed and how long they live. Protected species officer in the Wanganui conservancy, Wayne Hutchinson, says the work involves wading down the river keeping the birds in front until finally they swim into a net strung across fast flowing water at the top of a rapid. "Banding is done when the birds are moulting and can't fly or when they have young and they won't leave," he said. The work is part of an on-going research project by DoC scientistMurray Williams who's spent 14 years looking at the species.
