Fish and game elections
"Don't just grumble about it, have your say !" That's the advice of this area's fish and game council manager Mathew McDougal. Anglers and hunters usually have a lot to say about the cost of their licences, he says, and others have a lot to say about everything. Anglers now have an opportunity to make their say count in the elections for the Taranaki Fish and Game Council to be held on 8 April. "Y ou can either have your say through a vote or take that extra step and stand for council," said Mr McDougal. Candidates for the council are required to hold a current Taranaki adult whole-season licence. Registration closes on 25 February. Those wishing to vote are required to hold either an adult whole-season 1993 game licence or an adult wholeseason 1992-93 fish licence. "We have a record in the office, so if you are unsure whether you requested to vote when purchasing your licence, give us a ring and we will check for you." The Taranaki Region is made up of five sub-regions (based on the old Acclimatisation Society boundaries). The Conservation Act states that at least one member of the council shall be from each sub-region. If less than 12 applications are received to stand for the council then an election will not be necessary. Some licence holders purchased their licences in other regions, which enables them to vote in the region of purchase. All 12 fish and game regions will be holding elections at the same time.
