He did his apprenticeship for the Wellington Scania and Nissan agency, leaving three years after completing it to work for a Wellington bus company where he moved into management. For a time he did a lot of work on fishing trawlers, maintaining V12 Detroits, Cummins and Gardner engines. He moved to Napier to work for the Ministry of Works, then Civil Construction, where he serviced their fleet of vehicles from cars to heavy earthmoving machinery including Mitsubishi bulldozers to Caterpillar D9s to Komatsu 155s. He went into business on his own in Raupunga, reopening a garage that had been closed for 18 months. He sold it after three years and bought an old Ministry of Works depot. He was working on the Koi Young & Sons machinery in that area, when the job here was offered. Turn to Page 16
