'Winning Waimarino' chosen as Mainstreet name
"Winning Waimarino" is now the official name of Ohakune and Raetihi' s Mainstreet project. At a meeting held last Thursday, the Mainstreet group and Ruapehu South Business Association members chose the name for the project, over others such as Waimarino Way, Venture South Ruapehu, Central Vision, Wonderful Waimarino, and Action Ruapehu. Mainstreet co-ordinator Sue Allomes opened discussion on the issue saying she favoured Venture South Ruapehu, coupled with the words "Ohakune and Raetihi' s Mainstreet Project." She said the name summed up what the project was about and using the name 'Ruapehu' would be useful in promoting the area around the country. (Promotion is one of the objectives set down by the Community Employment Group). Mainstreet chairman Robert Horne said the first thing that had to be promoted was the idea to local people. "Waimarino is an identity. A lot of local people would like to see that name used. We've got to sell it (the Mainstreet project) to the locals first." Hope Vaughn said the area had been 'Waimarino' for more than 100 years.
