Support for cancer sufferers available
It is a sad fact that demand for the services of the Waimarino Cancer Support Group has grown steadily during its 10 years of operation. However, with volunteers numbering 24 the group is well able to cope with the increasing demand. Volunteers offer local people theopportunity for 'time out', which may involve someone coming in to sit with the patient, enabling the caregiver to take a break. They also offer a shuttle service to Palmerston North and Wanganui Base Hospitals for cancer sufferers requiring treatment. Failing that, petrol vouchers are available to help ease the fmancial strain on families. Families also benefit from the generosity of volunteers through baked goods, on-going support and other gestures of good will. Those people in need of the services of the Waimarino Cancer Support Group can reach them through their respective co-ordinators; in Ohakune - Peggy Frew and Gwen Doble, and in Raetihi - Val Littlewood and Betty Longcroft. Alternatively, contact may be made through Waimarino District Nurse, Sonya Robb. The Cancer Society' s main fund-raising thrust occurs in August with the nationwide 'DaffodilDay.' Traditionally the project is very well supported in the Waimarino area, raising around $1,500 per year. While the money raised is directed to Wanganui, funds. are returned to the area for use.
