More planned for Waiouru drop-in centre
Waiouru' s community information and drop in centre is stepping up its planned activities after a successful maiden year in 1993. Thanks to a community funding grant from the department of social welfare, a paid activities coordinator will now run the centre which was previously run on a purely voluntary basis. The centre provides a variety of services for mothers who don't work as well as the wider community, including a creche for jazzergetics fans held three times a week. Changing facilities are available for parents caught short and a cup
of tea is happily provided for thirsty shoppers. Regular morning teas are organised, providing an opportunity for people to get to know each other, also a telephone is available for those without one. Planned activities for 1994 include the setting up of a holiday programme for bored school kids, bus trips around the region, and various displays and courses throughout the year. Reference books are there for the using and a book exchange system is in place. Denise Lenihan, Waiouru 's social worker, is the overseer of the centre and Alison Tamepo is the activities co-ordinator. Alison
will run the centre between the hours of 9.30 to 1 1.30 am. Ideas from the public are called for, and if you receive nO reply at the centre, ring Alison at home on Waiouru (06) 387 6323.
