Waimarino fires

The Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade attended two call outs in the past week. □ Two appliances attended a house fire in

Thames Street, Ohakune at 11.45am on Wednesday morning. The fire was started when the occupant attempted to strip the exterior paint using a blow torch. Ohakune Fire Safety Officer, Kevin Munn, cautioned people using blow torches to remove old paint, especially that on older homes. Mr Munn said flames from the torch had ignited builder's paper under the eaves and had spread beneath the roofing iron. The occupant of the house had noticed smoke and had managed to extinguish the fire before it had spread too far. □ The Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade attended an oil spill at the bottom of Ohutu Hill on State Highway 49. The spill was so minor that no action was required by the brigade. The spill was reported by a passing motorist.
