District planners' review supported

A set of rules governing the implementation of the Ruapehu District Plan was reviewed in a paper presented to councillors by district planner Jane Whyte when the Ruapehu District Council met in T aumarunui last week. The next step in the preparation of the District Plan is to determine the method by which it is to be implemented. Of the three different methodologies considered in this five-page paper were: the traditional approach; the

effects-based approach and one in which the other two are amalgamated. The recommendation at the conclusion of the paper was that the traditionalbased approach with some variation will provide the type of District Plan the community will be able to understand. The most important factor is that the rules which are developed and included within the District Plan are reasonable. Taking up on this point Cr Bob Peck said that "as a

traditionally reasonable man he would like to commend the district planners (Jane Whyte and Jeff Page) on their review." However he did ask if it would be possible to make some of the planning papers and flies, particularly those associated with the southern wards, available in Ohakune or Raetihi so that abetter opportunity was available to study issues in advance of the usual two to three days notice before a meeting or workshop was

held in Taumarunui. Chief executive Cliff Houston said that anything was possible, including the duplication of flies in the Ohakune Service Centre, but not within the present budget and with present resources. He reminded coun-

cillors that the District planners were usually in the Ohakune/Raetihi/Wai ouru area every Thursday. Council agreed to provide its support to the approach set out by the planners in their review of the District Plan rules.
