No strike for Waimarino nurses
it is business as usual today at the Waimarino Health Centre, while nursing staff at Good Health Wanganui strike until Friday. A spokesperson from Waimarino Health Centre said the strike action by Wanganui nurses will not affect day to day running or care of patients at the centre. Meanwhile in Wanganui, critically ill patients and those requiring intensive care were transferred to neighbouring CHE's yesterday, and incoming emergency cases re-directed.
Wanganui people requiring medical assistance have been asked to go to their GP's first, whereever possible, to reduce the work-load at the hospital. A full-time volunteers hot line is currrently in operation at Good Health Wanganui, to ensure patients' needs are adequately met until the strike action is ended. About 90 offers of help have already been received, but hospital officials say that with the number of shifts involved, about twice that number of volunteers will be needed.
