As the Ruapehu Visitor Centre is now the responsibility of the marketing department of Ruapehu Council, funds are no longer required to assist in its administration and subscriptions have been lowered from $250 to $50 per business. □ Ohakune Retailers Christmas Carnival, 24 December. □ 1993/94 summer campaign Meetings have been held with operators in National Park, Taumarunui and Ohakune to set the 'shape and form' of this years summer campaign. So far 18 contributors have joined forces with the Ruapehu District Council to promote the summer campaign via brochures, advertising and magazine editorial. If you are interested in becoming a community member, your are welcome to attend any of the following meetings. □ RSBA executive

meeting, 11 and 25 November, 9 and 16 December, at the Ruapehu Visitor Centre, 5 ,30pm. □ Mainstreet, Ohakune Hotel, 8.30am. Wednesday 9 and 17 November, 1 and 15 December. □ Pre -Christmas gettogether for all businesses in Ohakune and Raetihi, 7 December (details later.) □ Central North Island tourism campaign The Ruapehu District joined forces recently with other North Island operators and the New Zealand Tourism board to promote a campaign called 'A Real Slice of Heaven', targeting

'Heartland New Zealand' as an alternative option to New Zealand' s traditional tourist routes. This was marketed to public and travel agents extensively in Australia. Mainstreet Having already once submitted an application for funding for Mainstreet and being lost in Wellington bureaucratic muddle, a second application has been lodged with the Community Employment Group. The project development team of Ohakune and Raetihi aim to meet four major objectives within the twelve months the grant is operational, should funds be granted. □ Design of Township - A conceptual design of Ohakune and Raetihi townships to better meet the needs of the local population and our fast growing tourism industry . □ A Professional Assistant. - To initiate, co-ordinate and develop the ideas of the project team. This will include assistance with internal and external promotion for both towns. □ Community Beautification - Main ideas have been suggested by members of the community, how better our towns would look with tidied walkways, planted gardens and attractive seating areas. Along with Task Force Green assistance, a start on this task is expected. O Business Skills Training and Seminars - A chance for small business owners to gain new skills. It is expected to run two courses throughout the year. Christmas Carnival Ohakune Friday 24 December, lpm to 4pm, Ohakune Shopping Centre. Live entertainment, Santa arriving, lolly scrambles and competitions etc for the children. Raetihi Saturday 18 December, 9am to 2pm approximately, Raetihi Main Street. Santa arriving by fire-engine, stalls, raffles, lolly scrambles etc.
