Tongariro crossing/Tongariro northern circuit The snow base over the crossing has washed back slightly, but is still present in the South and Central craters. The south side . of the Red Crater is clear of snow. South Crater may have lake water present, but trampers can walk around this area. Trampers should be prepared for alpine conditions. To ensure a safe and pleasant trip, check weather conditions before starting your walk. Also remember the right clothing and equipment are essential. Ngauruhoe summit Trampers must take particular care on Ngauruhoe. There is snow and ice on the route and intending climbers should be prepared with ice-axe and crampons. Mount Ruapehu All climbers should be prepared with alpine equipment (ice-axe and crampons). Snow conditions are variable. People need to check route (it is not marked), weather forecast and have suitable gear beforehand. Weather conditions are changeable and will affect the snow conditions. Ohakune All tracks in the Ohakune area are clear of snow and ice. Any intending climbers above the snow-line will need to be prepared with iceaxe and crampons.
