Remanded in custody

Atawhai Snow Kuru, 26, shearer of Mt Wellington, Auckland, was remanded in custody to appear in the

Auckland District Court on 28 October after pleading guilty to one charge of burglary and one charge of unlawfully taking a car. Court heard how on 17 May Kuru had stolen a Honda Prelude valued at $ 1 2,000 from Henderson in Auckland and driven, with an associate, to Ohakune where he had broken into the Junction Ski Shop and stolen $30,000 worth of ski clothing. He had loaded the stolen gear into the Honda Prelude but crashed the vehicle nearby. All the clothing was recovered. Reparation of $4000 for damage to the car and $ 1 877 for damage to the Junction Ski Shop was sought. In remanding Kuru in custody to appear in Auckland (where he faces other charges) Judge Watson said he was particularly concerned that these offences had been committed while defendant was serving a sentence of periodic detention. Counsel: Paul Brown.
