Carrots to go by railway

Tenders have been called to bring an ex-railways goods shed to Ohakune to house a carrot grading and packaging shed for export to overseas markets. Main Trunk Rail Ohakune (MTRO) is working with New Zealand Rail to bring in the shed and site it opposite the old 'Ways and Works Office' (now MTRO headquarters) in the Ohakune railway yards. The shed will be operated by a local businessman who will instal the packaging equipment. There will be three to four grades of carrot to be packaged, they will be quick frozen and then railed to Auckland to be processed. It is expected that five containers per week will be shipped to start with. "It has been around 15 years since vegetables have left Ohakune by rail to go to market and MTRO is working toward getting more vegetables on rail," said a MTRO spokesman.
