Resource planning hui

The Ruapehu district's Iwi Liaison Working Party gets into action today with the first of a series of hui to discuss Tangata Whenua submissions to the Council's annual planning process. Following discussions on the Resource Management Act 1991 between the Ruapehu District Council and Tangata Whenua representatives, a meeting was called at Taumarunui recently. The meeting was convened by the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board chairperson Archie Tai aroa and included representatives of Ngati

Tu wharetoa, Ngati Maniapoto and the Tamaupoko and Hinengakau Trusts (Te Ati Hau Nui A Papa Rangi) and the Ruapehu District Council. Following that meeting the Tangata Whenua made a formal submission to the full Ruapehu District Council, asking for the formation of an I wi Liaison W orking Party. The working party'sbrief was: To formulate a submission to be presented to Council for inclusion in its 10 year plan; To formulate hapu resource management plans to support the submission to the District plan.

By targeting the district plan it was felt that an outcome could be achieved that would be of benefit to both Tangata Whenua and the Ruapehu District Council constituency as a whole. The debate over resources use has come under scrutiny through the Resource Management Act 1991 and it i s hoped that the Iwi Liaison Working Party' s role will be to bring Tangata Whenua concerns to the fore. The initial task of the working party will be to set up a series of Hui-A-Iwi with the respective hapu, aimed at forming a draft Turn to Page 11.
