Church into the trees

The Anglican Church in Raetihi is seeking to invest in forestry. At a special meeting in July members of the Anglican Church in Raetihi discussed how the remaining portion of its bequest from the Irwin estate should be spent. It was agreed to invest amajorpartof thefunds in share-farming cattle as a medium-term fund-raising projectfor the church. Some money is also to be given to overseas missionary work. A portion was also set aside for forestry as a longterm investment. It was decided that sufficient funds would be available for a forestry planting of about five hectares. This would be by way of a 'joint venture' with a local landowner. The church would carry out the work and both parties would share the eventual proceeds on an agreed basis. It is hoped to commence the project in 1994. The church is now seeking a land-owner partner in the Waimarino district with a suitable planting site, preferably reasonably close to Raetihi. The contact person for this project is Andrew Allen, phone 385-4138.
