Private skifield

• I refer to a recent article by Jenelle Frewen titled 'Private skiing anyone*. The article stated that the eastern slope of Mount Ruapehu provided a private skifield. This impression is absolutely wrong and your readers deserve to learn the truth. Tukino Skifield is managed as a low development skifield in contrast to the commercial fields of Turoa and Whakapapa. This is a deliberate policy that has been developed with full public support. The skifields have formed an association which pperates the tows. The public are welcome to use the tows whenever they operate! It is quite misleading to infer there needs to be a special arrangement. Without the skifield the road would probably be closed at the Round the Mountain Track carpark. The Park Management Plan states that the road should be maintained to a four-wheel-drive standard only. A locked gate has been placed on the road because of repeated burglaries and vandalism to the club huts. Whenever the skifield is open the road is open to four-wheel-drive traffic subject to snow and weather conditions.
