Snow drought breaks
Every cloud has a silver lining and the one greeting weekend skiers was full of snow for Ruapehu. After what seems like a season-long drought,
snow fell on Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino on Sunday and Monday. On Turoa 20 centimetres of dry powder snow fell on the upper slopes and 10Tum to page 2
Snow falls
From page 1 15 cm on lower slopes, while "lots of fresh snow" fell at Whakapapa. About 3000 skiers visited Turoa on Saturday, but were chased away by high winds after most lifts closed early, about 2.15pm. Whakapapa had about 4100 skiers on Saturday. On Sunday poor weather kept all but Whakapapa's Happy Valley shut. Yesterday the bad weather kept all three fields closed in the moming. Whakapapa and Turoa opened mid-day, both with fresh winds, Turoa with 20-25 knot northeasterly winds and a very chilly minus ll°Celsius. The conditions kept the T-Bars closed, but staff reported good numbers.
