Soldiers play rugby
Competition was fierce last week in the annual New Zealand Army Inter-Regional Rugby Toumament. Five teams representing the whole of New Zealand competed in a series of matches, held over four
days in Waiouru. The teams which competed were divided into regional representation, with Northern comprising the army units located north of Waiouru the Army Training Group itself fielding a side, Central from units at Linton, Wellington and Southern, taking in all the units from the South Island. Final results showed Central to be the overall winner of the toumament, soundly beating the Southern side 56-7 in the play-off for first place. Central were very impressive scoring three quick tries in the last 15 minutes of the game. Tension was high on the last day's play with one player from Central being sent off mid-way through the second-half of the final match. The match to decide the third place-getter was very close with the ATG just being beaten by Wellington 28-24 and putting in a good effort late in the game scoring two tries. Following the tournament selection was made for the New Zealand Army Rugby team with 11 players from Central being selected, three from Northem, five from Wellington, five from Southern and McLean, Harrison and Mete from the ATG making up the 27-strong team. Cpl Ni August, prop for Central was judged
Best Player for the tournament, while Northem was deemed the Best Sporting Team thus taking home the trophy donated by Shell Waiouru.
