Tongariro rescue
A Wellington woman spent a cold Saturday night lost in Tongariro Forest, near Turangi, before being found by a Search and Rescue team Sunday morning. The woman, 40 year old Barbara Ward, had gone for a walk early yesterday aftemoon. She followed the Mangatepopo Stream for about two hours before realising that there was not enough daylight left for her to safely return home. After some initial concerns, Ms Ward made herself comfortable for the night and waited until first light
before attempting to make her way out. Ms Ward's companions, who had been skiing on Mt Ruapehu, alerted authorities that she was missing at about 4pm yesterday afternoon. An initial search by locals on Saturday night failed to find her. Six search and rescue teams from Central King Country and Turangi coordinated by Police and Department of Conservation staff set out at first light Sunday morning to find Ms Ward. She was found at about 9am walking up
the Mangatepopo Stream. She was cold but otherwise unhurt. Search controller Sgt Rob Duindum from Taumarunui Police praised search teams for their efforts and the smooth running of the rescue.
