Whose building?
The Waimarino Community Board wants to know who now owns the old Turner's Butcher site in Raetihi, so that plans for the vacant land can be made. Board member John Compton told the board at their last meeting he would like the board to seek input from the community for future use of the land, but was uncertain who owned it. He said he was amazed that the council could demolish a building if it didn't own it and that he believed the council took it over because of rates arrears. Council director John Murrihy said he understood the council placed a demolition order on the building, which was not complied with, which gave council the right to demolish the building itself despite not owning the property. Mr Compton called for clarification of the ownership issue and the board agreed.
