Scores all locked up at Waiouru

The Ohakune senior women's side were pleased with their five-all draw with evenly matched rivals Waiouru in an exciting clash on Sunday. Although the Ohakune forward pack won heaps of ball from the scrums and rucks, the backs were unable to finish off the good work. Waiouru, who relied on their backs for some awesome tackling on defence, were unable to retain possession of the ball. The Waiouru backs had the better of their rivals but were shut down by some committed Ohakune forwards. At half-time the scores were locked at nil-all and both teams picked up the work rate. M J Savage scored a great individual try after running straight up the middle from a penalty tap. Ohakune who were determined to win, replied with a surge of strong runs by the forwards. Hooker Mo
Akapita scored the equalising try which complemented the hard work done by all the forwards. There were no players who stood out as both teams were committed to their jobs and everyone played above themselves. For Ohakune that was their final game for the year. Waiouru have to play in the plate final next week. The after-match function was a roar with everybody having a good time, especially a secret guitar player from Raetihi who stayed to the bitter end. The only negative part of the game would be in the way the referee controlled the match. He failed to let the game flow and constantly had his hand on his whistle. This reporter believes it is extremely disappointing how the Wanganui Rugby Union seem to appoint president grade referees to control senior rugby
