Centre handed over

The Ruapehu Visitor Centre was officially handed over to the Ruapehu District Council by the Ruapehu South Business Association at their annual general meeting last week. Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman said he was sure the council would continue to operate the centre as successfully as the RSBA had done. "There are brighter things ahead for our in-

formation centres, such as the ECNZ sponsorship," he said. "Hopefully we can build on what the RSBA has done." He said he believed it was a natural progression rather than a takeover. "If we get this (marketing) division of the council working effectively it would be a very brave council that dropped it." Mr Workman praised the staff of the centre,

and thanked the RSBA for handing over the centre 'so' gracefully', considering the earlier differences of opinion. Marketing manager Bruce Rollinson said it was important for the local involvement in the centre to continue. FOOTNOTE: Other media have incorrectly reported this event. The council has not taken over the Raetihi Information Centre, and Ohakune 's information

centre was set up by the Waimarino Bulletin (now the Ruapehu Bulletin), then taken over by the Automobile Association, then the RSBA. The association upgraded the centre to Visitor Information Network standard. Officers elected at the RSBA meeting were: Sue Allomes, chairperson; Phil Abel, vice chairperson; and committee members Joanna Savage, Graham Berry, Jane Haggart, Glennis

Shepherd, Bob Graves, Dennis Bonham and Dennis Beytagh. Councillors compassionate? At last week's meeting of the Ruapehu District council in Taumarunui, councillors noticed that minutes secretary Tessa Hall was feeling unwell and she admitted she had been taking medication to fend off a bout of flu. When Cr Stuart Shaw later noticed a deterioration in Ms Hall's condition he interrupted proceedings to suggest she should be excused so that she could go home to bed. Cr Eddie Turley observed: "It's just as well we are a considerate council and not a group of farmers otherwise we would advise that she should be put down!"
