Track update
The huts on the Tongariro Northern Circuit are now Category 2 for winter - two back-country hut tickets per night ($8 per adult, $4 per youth, no charge for under 11 years old). The huts basically provide gas heaters, toilet, water supply, bunks and mattresses. There are n o gas cookers or hut wardens over the winter months. Tongariro crossing Further snow is expected to fall over the next few days bringing the snow-level down to about 1200 metres. The snow on the upper section of the track above Ketetahi and the Mangatepopo Saddle will remain. Trampers should be prepared with ice-axe and crampons. Intending trampers and walkers should consult weather forecasts before visiting the area and be well equipped. Ngauruhoe summit Trampers must take particular care on Ngauruhoe. pared with ice-axe and crampons. Mount Ruapehu • There is fresh snow on Mount Ruapehu. All climbers should be prepared with alpine equipment. • People need to check the route (it is nof marked), the weather forecast and have suitable gear. Weather conditions are changeable which will affect the snow conditions. • Avalanche Hazard: Areas of unstable snow will exist in wind-loaded pockets on steep slopes at high altitudes where a snowbase has already built up. Remember: Conditions can change daily on the alpine tracks. Don't take any unnecessary risks.
