Conditions test S&R volunteers in exercise
While Waimarino Police were involved in a real-life rescue drama on Saturday (refer story in B ulletin), King Country and Wanganui Search and Rescue members, Police and civilians were searching the Tongariro Forest in a mock rescue exercise. Thirty-five people took to the Blue Hill area - approximately 600 square kilometres of native virgin bush - to search for two hunters reported overdue. The exercise commenced at 9pm Friday night, with searchers and 'victims'
walking out of the bush at 12pm on Sunday. Police officials said the aim of the exercise was to familiarise volunteers with local terrain and conditions, andprovide valuable in-field experience. Searchers spent a cold and wet night under canvas in the Tongariro Forest, with a fortunate few sheltering in the two nearby huts. The inclement weather also created problems for the rescue helicopter, flown in from Taumarunui, which experienced difficulty in reaching the search area.
