More on Whakapapa
The North Island ski season gets into full swing this weekend when Whakapapa opens their upper facilities for intermediate and expert skiers. Whakapapa has offered limited beginner skiing since mid-June and from Wednesday the Rockgarden and Waterfall Express chairlifts will operate for limited intermediate skiing. By Saturday, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts willalso have the Valley, Knoll and Waterfall T-bars operating along with the Cindertrack Platter hft. The new Knoll Ridge Cafeteria will open on Saturday and the creche, ski shop, ski workshop, Top o' The Bruce ski hire and cafeteria and Happy Valley ski hire and cafeteria will all be operating. On the western slopes
of Whakapapa the West Ridge Quad Chairlift will operate if the present storm cycle deposits sufficient snow on the lower trails. The Far West T-bar will not operate until early August as the extreme weather conditions on that very exposed lift make it impractical to operate in July. "We are thrilled with the amount of snow we've received in the last two days", said Scott Lee, marketing manager at Whakapapa. "It looks like the season is really going to start with a bang this year. It is great to be offering such good skiing for all levels of skiers so early in the season. With mid-term break and the Primo Taupo Winter Festival starting next Saturday, it could'nt have been better", he added.
