Skiing starts
Temperatures are dropping, but Turoa Skifields is holding off opening for the 1993 winter season until another good dumping of snow comes their way. Turoa promotions manager, Rob Jewell, said cold ovemight temperatures had helped maintain the good snow base on the upper slopes, but a change in the weather to southerlies is needed for more snow and an end of the month opening. Whakapapa Whakapapa Skifield opened for the weekend in overcast conditions, with approximately 700 people enjoying the limited facilities.
Hut Flat Rope Tows 1 and 2 were operating as was the Centennial Chairlift for sight-see-ing. First-timers packs and reduced beginner's packs were offered - adults skiing for $18 and children for $9. The ski field 's Schuss Haus cafe was also open for those intrepid sightseers on
the upper slopes. Monday's blue skies and warm conditions attracted large numbers of people to the slopes. Promotions assistant Pip York, said Happy Valley will open when more snow-making has taken place. The rest of the field will open as soon as there is more snow to make them skiable, she said.
