Accidents, thefts & budgie blues
Waiouru Police File BY CONSTABLE CHRIS SCALES • Firstly, a belated thanks to all the emergency personnel who attended the horrific fatal smash at Mulvay's Corner on Queen's Birthday Weekend. Fire and ambulance staff from both Taihape and Waiouru did a tremendous job at the scene under very trying conditions for about three hours, enabling Police from both afeas to freely carry out their own du-
ties. , It appears that again speed was a contributing factor in this fatality. • Sometime during late evening Saturday night or early Sunday morning, theives broke into the new Bojangels Restaurant in the Oasis Hotel and virtually cleaned out the bar area. Over $500 worth of every spirit and cans of Lion Red and DB beer were stolen. Someone must have seen this happen and I know someone must know who the offenders are. Please help us to solve this offence, like you
have helped us solve the majority of other offences in Waiouru. We certainly don't want this type of offending in our community and I am sure, neither do you. • During past weeks a burglary occurred at the Fastlane Restaurant and the Oasis Hotel/Motel units. Property from both burglaries amounted to well over $1000 and again information from you resulted in most of the property being recovered. A 17-year old local man was arrested for both burglaries. It is pleasing to see that this
community does not tolerate offending in this manner. • For those who may not know, the Police Station is in Rangipo Street, about 100 metres from the RSA. As we are not a 24-hour manned police station, there may be times that you will get the 'dreaded' answerphone when you ring us. The answerphone gives several instructions on how to contact us. Either Constable Thomas or myself can be contacted 24 -hours a day, depending on who's on duty or on call. One of us is always available. It is easier and quicker to contact the duty police officer through the directions on the answerphone, than trying to direct police inquiries to our private home numbers or addresses. • We are holding a ring with a large ruby surrounded by smaller diamonds. If it is yours, please come and collect it. It was found at the rear of the Weir Street Kindergarten last week. • Left in the Bojangels Restaurant
last Thursday night was a green money-belt containing over $1000. If you saw anyone pick it up, or picked it up yourself, please hand it into the Police Station. I will be quite happy too, if the money belt suddenly magically appears at the Police Station or turns up. The owner is offering a reward. • We receive a lot of enquiries regarding driver or vehicle licensing. We only carry out driver testing on specific days of a month. All enquiries regarding licences, bookings, information and payment should be directed through ATGSU in the Military Camp. • Pete and I would like to thank the Gunners for the whipround they had to help pay for Billy the Police Budgie's funeral expenses. One dollar 53 cents was raised, adequately covering the cost of Billy's internment shroud and a box of KlennEx tissues. The support was overwhelming and we are very humbled. • Every one have a safe week.
