Tongariro tracks in winter mode
From D.O.C. Huts on the Tongariro Northern Circuit are now in their winter category '2' status which means trampers will need to carry their own cookers. Gas heating is still provided. Tongariro Crossing The snow that has previously affected the track has been washed away by warm rain and mild temperatures. The track is virtually free of snow. Intending trampers and walkers should consult weather forecasts before visiting the area as further snow, gale force winds and low temperatures are forecasted for this weekend. Ngauruhoe Summit Trampers must take particular care on Ngauruhoe. There is still some snow on the route and intending climbers should be prepared with ice axe and crampons. Mount Ruapehu There is fresh snow
on Mt Ruapehu down to about 2000m and ail climbers should be prepared with alpine equipment. Storm conditions are fore;cast for this weekend. Be particularly aware of waterfall holes and shrunds, (where snow opens up next to rocks or from creep or glide due to irregularities under the snow.) The recognised routes from Whakapapa Skifield to Crater Lake - up the gut or via Restful Ridge - are fairly straight-forward. People need to check the route (it's not marked), weather forecast and have suitable gear before attempting. Weather conditions are changeable which will affect the snow conditions. As winter approaches intending trampers should check track conditions on any of the alpine tracks before the attempt, conditions can change daily.
