Waikune still in limbo
Despite a shortage of , prison accommodation in New Zealand, there are apparently no plans to reactivate Waikune Prison south of National Park, which is currently vacant. And plans to sell it are currently in limbo because of a Maori land claim before the Waitangi Tribunal. Mr Ross Gilbert, secretary of the National Park Progressive Association, reported to a recent NPPA meeting that he had made inquiries about plans for
i the prison. "It is currently in the care of Landcorp, which is responsible for caretaking and maintenance. I was told there can be no development there until the Maori land claim is settled. This could be early next year." The closure of the prison had an economic impact on National Park and NPPA prisident Warren Furner says it is ironic that is should be sitting unoccupied while the government is faccd with a crisis over prison accommodation.
