Raetihi Rugby Seniors won 21-12 on their home ground on Saturday 15 May against Wanganui Pirates. Playing in wet conditions and 10 minutes later than plarined put a damper on the game but spirits lifted after the first five minutes when P Trow scored the first try of the game for
Raetihi. Both teams did quite a good job of keeping the other from scoring until E Taura made a break and scored a try for Raetihi taking the score to 10-0 after 15 minutes. Raetihi player D McDonnell kicked the first successful penalty five minutes after Raetihi's second try. P Trow almost had another
try but unfortunately for him it was 'held up'. After 30 minutes M Hapuku of Raetihi was sent off for five minutes for 'putting the boot in after the whistle'. Wanganui Pirate player W Kauika scored their first try with one minute remaining of the first half. The half-time score was 13-5 to Raetihi.
For the first 25 minutes of the second-half neither team scored until Raetihi was awarded a penalty which was successfully kicked by D McDonnell. There was no scoring for the next 15 minutes until B Kavanagh charged down, enabling P Trow to score his second try of the game taking the score to 21-5 with 10 minutes remaining. During the final 10 minutes Wanganui Pirates were awarded a penalty try which was converted by M Parr making the final score 21-12 to Raetihi. Raetihi: Tries - P Trow 2, E Taura 1; Penalties - D McDonnell 2. Wanganui Pirates: Tries - W Kauika 1 penalty try 1; Conversions - M Parr.
