Better service from Kiwihosts

by Shelly of the RIC Better service to customers was the aim at a Kiwihost programme held at the Sunbeam Lodge, Ohakune, Wednesday 5 May. Thirteen people from

Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru, were at the programme, run by Colette Turner of T aumarunui. Ms Turner is the principal course tutor for Taumarunui Development Ino. She has

a Kiwihost leader's certificate and a Kiwihost proficiency leader's certificate. For the Ruapehu district Kiwihost programmes are usually run in Taumarunui but Ms Turner has to put her Ohakune Hospitality, Food and Beverage Course students through the Kiwihost Programme. She felt it would be beneficial to her students here for all service people dealing with the public to try to improve service in this area. "I feel that people skills are the most important thing. If you can make people feel welcome they will come back and . that will help the economy grow", Ms Tumer said. The main topics of the programme that were covered on Wednesday were: 'The importance of

visitors and customers.' 'Are You Communicating?,' 'Are You Listening?' 'Where Did Everybody Go?', 'You Be the Host' and 'Handling Complaints'. She said Kiwihost is setting a nation al customer service standard, but it is also flexible to suit individual business needs. "There is a difference between service and being servile and if you can be the best that you can and proud of what you do then you have provided a service," continued Ms Turner. In order to pass the

Kiwihost programme students have to participate in activities throughout the course and have to get 70 percent correct in the test at the end of the programme. Those who attended the Kiwihost programme appeared to find it very beneficial and a lot of good comments were made about the way it was tutored. "I thought it was neat," said Cindy Evans of Waimarino Livestock, Raetihi, "I'm sure there were some others who were on the Kiwihost programme with me who feel the same way." .
