Truck kills Desert Rd brumby

A wild horse was killed when it was hit by a truck on the Desert Road late last Thursday night. The horse was one of a group of five or six Kaimanawa wild horses crossing the state

highway seven kilometres north of Waiouru. An eye-wit-ness, following the truck, said that the driver swerved to miss the group of horses but was unable to avoid the last horse.

The dead horse was found by the Waiouru police early on Friday morning. Constable Chris Scales said it was fortunate the horse had been struck by a large vehicle. "Had the -accident in-

volved a smaller vehicle like a private motor-car, it could have been much worse," he said. Because of the road safety hazard, the Department of Conservation has so far this year removed three

groups of horses from the same area of the Desert Road. DoC is investigating where the remaining horses from the group have gone and whether they are a hazard to traffic on State Highway One.
