Sika trophy draws hunters
In spite of a spasmodic start to the Central North island Sika roar, more than 50 entries for the Skia Trophy competition have so far been received by the Department of Conservation in Turangi. "The response so far has been great. The most unusual entry is a 10, almost
11, point-sika stag," said Cam Speedy, organiser of the competition and senior conservation officer at DoC's Turangi office. To date entries have come from as far as Puketitiri, on the Napier side of the Kawekas to the Waihohonu area of Tongariro National Park.
Most are eight point heads but a number of more unusual heads have also been entered. The competition runs until 20 May and will be judged on Sunday 23 Ma> at the Spa Hotel, Taupo. More than $5000 of prizes have been donated by local businesses including a
$2000 rifle. All entries are in the draw for prizes. The top three heads will be mounted. Competition trophies will be on display at the Spa Hotel, Taupo, from Ilam on the prize giving day. Further details about the competition from Cam Speedy Tel 07-386-8607
