Raetihi fires

The Raetihi Fire Brigade answered several calls recently one of which was described as "unnecessary' by a brigade spokesman. Late Sunday afternoon, 28 February, the Fire Brigade was called to attend to a blazing txee in Duncan Street. The cause of the fire is not certain, but it is most likely young children playing with matches or cigarettes were to blame, as such material appeared at the scene. Monday aftemoon saw a call-out from Horopito,

which both Ohakune and Raetihi appliances attended. A tractor engine had caught fire and required the use of the Raetihi foam unit and the water tank from the Ohakune brigade. The fire was brought under control rapidly, but heavy damage had been done to the tractor and the vehicle may be written off. The Fire Brigade spokesman was particularly concerned at the first of these call-outs, as it is an example of the calls which need not happen in the first place.
